In this material, we once again want to remind you of the need to install software only from trusted sources. TrueCrypt is no exception here. Since it is no longer possible to download a safe version of the program from the official site, we recommend downloading it from a reliable source , otherwise ...

Otherwise, you may have big problems. In 2015, ESET published an investigation into the distribution of TrueCrypt with the Win32/Potao trojan in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet. Malicious software (hereinafter referred to as software) was spread through the site www.truecryptrussia.ru, which was probably created specifically for the distribution of an infected version of the program. At the time of this writing, the Truecryptrussia site was displayed in 3rd place in Yandex for the query "TrueCrypt". And, of course, Truecryptrussia is just one of many sites that distribute malware.

According to ESET experts, Potao malware is designed for cyber espionage and extraction of various confidential information of the victim with subsequent sending to attackers.

Just imagine: you enter “TrueCrypt” in the search engine, download an infected version, encrypt your most valuable files with it, hoping to securely protect them, and they go to the attackers, along with a lot of other important information, including your passwords, information about activity on the network, files on the hard drive.

After installing a compromised version of TrueCrypt, attackers can watch you through the camera, listen to you through the microphone, and see your screen. Expecting to protect valuable data, you have installed the perfect spy for yourself with your own hands.

According to a number of experts, the malicious version of the TrueCrypt program was used in the interests of law enforcement agencies and government agencies of the Russian Federation. But this is nothing more than a guess.

If you have already downloaded TrueCrypt from a dubious source, we strongly recommend that you reinstall the system, reconsidering your attitude to security. First, you need to accept that your personal information is probably no longer yours. Secondly, to realize that all the time since the installation of the compromised version of TrueCrypt, you could have been followed.
